    Hey Beach Bums!

woman on beach I'm sitting here, listening to the rain outside my window.  I have always loved summer rain.  I remember one summer when I was a kid, savoring every indoor, rainy moment during a particularly hot August, spending all of my time holed up reading The Exorcist and losing myself in every page.  But back to the present!  This has been one of the hottest summers on record and I've spent more days at the beach than in many years past.  I've fallen in love with my glare-free Kindle and take it with me whenever I go.  I love the privacy of the Kindle experience; no one can tell if you're reading Harry Potter for the seventh time or a how-to book about infertility treatment.

No matter what your download, one thing's for sure.  Indoors or out, nothing can amuse, educate or inform better than a book.  And for people who are trying to build their families, books afford comprehensive, in-depth information as well as varying points of view on paths they might not have considered.

So make friends with your beach chair or curl up on the window seat with a cat in your lap.  This issue of Connect is devoted to some of our favorite reads, reviewed with you in mind  Drop us a line and let us know what your favorite beach bum read is too, we always love to hear from you.

Happy August everybody!  And needless to say, happy reading. - The AFA Editor
Riding the Infertility Roller Coaster: A Guide to Educate and Inspire
    Author: Iris Waichler, MSW, LCSW

iris Popular AFA blogger Iris Waichler has written a from-the heart, award winning book about coping with the infertility experience.  What we love about this read is its guide book format, and optimistic tone.  Detailed and comprehensive, Iris highlights the early day's whirlwind of diagnosis and treatment, the emotional aspects of moving onto third party reproduction and the heady experience of getting pregnant.  Adoption, and raising children with or without siblings is given equal attention, as is the experience of being a menopausal mom.  For people raising an only child, this is a must read. Click here to download.

    Growing Up Black in White
    Author: Kevin D. Hofmann

We dare you to put this one down.  Adult adoptee Kevin Hofmann's searing account of his early life is simultaneously poignant, powerful and raw.  Peppered with humor, Kevin's memoir tells the story of his adoption by and life with a white minister and his wife, who were already parents to three biological children.  Hofmann, whose birth mother was white and birth father black, grew up in the racially-charged atmosphere of the 1960s in Detroit, Michigan.  A natural-born story teller, he takes his readers through an intricately woven story about identity, abandonment, and love.  For all individuals but especially those considering becoming a transracial family, Hofmann's words will enlighten, entertain, and educate.  It's not yet available on kindle, but you can grab the book here.

the infertility workbook: A Mind-Body Program to Enhance Fertility, Reduce Stress, and Maintain Emotional Balance

    Author: Barbara Blitzer, LCSW-C, MEd

    mind body work book

More experience than book, the infertility workbook guides the user through mind-body exercises geared towards self-awareness, stress reduction, and communication with both self and partner.  With a strong emphasis on strengthening relationships, Blitzer gently supports infertilitly patients to take charge of their health and fertility.  Practical coping strategies plus information about the infertility journey are a plus.  Click here to download.

    Mommy, Was Your Tummy Big?

    Author: Carolina Nadelmommy tummy

Beautifully illustrated Mommy, Was Your Tummy Big? is a must-have for parents interested in explaining the donor egg experience to their children. A charming tale about a family of elephants and a lady elephant who brings a special gift, the book is simultaneously emotional  and lighthearted.  Written in easy to understand language, Nadel's book is perfect for very young children, and is also available in a donor sperm version.  You'll want this in hard copy, to read to your child over and over.  Grab it here.
