Wikipedia defines "reproductive rights" as the legal rights and freedoms relating to reproduction and reproductive health.  For the many couples and individuals across this country who will be relying upon assisted reproduction techniques to build their family, today's election may prove to be paramount.  Read Heather Ross' illuminating article on how each party stands on the Personhood Amendment and reproductive rights, below.

Your vote is your business.  It is also your birth right as an American and frankly, your obligation.  Today when you make your way to the polls, please think about the vast number of human beings across the planet who cannot simply wake up on Election Day, push a lever and engage in the Democratic process.  Your vote counts and you are lucky to have this right. People fought and died to give you this right.

Also remember today that thousands of individuals across the storm ravaged east coast will be doing their best to find food and shelter as well as their polling place.  To support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, please contact the American Red Cross to make a donation.

It's an important day and you can use it to make a difference in so many different ways.

I trust that by month's end, the Thanksgiving holiday finds you safe and well with those you love.

Removal of the "experimental" label for oocyte freezing led to a heated debate between Drs. Samantha Pfeifer and Nicole Noyes regarding social egg freezing.  Dr. Noyes took the position that, if provided accurate information and appropriate counseling, the decision should rest with the woman wishing to pursue this and Dr. Pfeifer asserting that the risks, lack of data (because of so few births so far), potential for exploitation, unfavorable risk/benefit ratios, cost, and potential for false hope argued against promoting egg freezing to otherwise healthy young women as a means to extend their fertility. Your vote matters. Make sure you vote, and make sure you are knowledgeable about each political candidate's stance on reproductive rights. The outcome of this election could affect the accessibility of reproductive treatment and the ability of doctors to offer family building options through assisted reproductive technology ("ART").  Read more.

    dad kid

NEW YORK, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- The American Fertility Association (The AFA) recognizes the significance of the report released November 1, 2012, by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noting the relationship between Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and the finding that "...women who undergo ART procedures are more likely to deliver multiple-birth infants than those who conceive naturally." The report highlights the "significant risks" that multiple births pose to both mothers and infants, and lists "pregnancy complications, pre-term delivery, and low birth-weight infants" as some of the major problems which can occur. ASRM 2012 Legal and Other Matters Update
a report from Meryl B. Rosenberg, Esq. and Colleagues

Laboratory and Clinical Errors: Real Life Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them.

Discussion between Susan Crockin, JD and C. Brent Barrett, Ph.D. of Boston IVF

Bottom line recommendation - Deal with them when they happen!

    • Critical to have in place procedures to prevent lab error and if there is an error, get in front of it and disclose immediately.
    • When there are real-life mix ups in the lab, which have occurred in the past, and one finds themselves carrying another's baby, the questions that must be addressed are -
      • What happens legally speaking both during a pregnancy and after birth?
      • Who is the legal parent?
      • Who will get custody of the baby?
      • Who will make pregnancy decisions?
    • With real life cases, some have a "happy" ending and some do not. Read more.
