What's God got to do with it?
For some people, nothing. For others, everything. They say the three topics you should never discuss at a dinner party are money, sex and religion. That may be true, but for people who are trying to conceive, religious belief and talk about infertility treatment often collide in hurtful and intrusive ways. Certainly, this has been a hot topic in pulpits around the world of late. While there are no easy answers, Marie Davidson Ph.D. and Ken Mosesian take this issue on in their respective articles, below.
From religion to politics, the topic of Infertility is not a new one on Capital Hill, either. If you would rather take on your Congressperson than your Clergy, April 22nd marks the beginning of National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW). AFA staffers and board members will join hands with patients and professionals in our Nation's capital on Wednesday, April 25th, for Resolve's Advocacy Day. There we will discuss reproductive health issues and the Family Act; try to join us if you can.
If you missed The AFA's latest installment from the Male Reproductive Health Alliance, click here. This issue focuses on steroid abuse and is an important read, particularly for young men.
As a person struggling to start a family, you may sometimes feel that the battles you need to fight are unending. It's bad enough that your body isn't cooperating, but when your pastor, legislator or mother-in-law get in the mix it may feel like too much. Hang in there. You have a community right here that is on your side and fighting with you. It won't always feel like this. We wish you success in everything you take on this month, and happy reading. - The AFA Editor

Keeping Your Faith: How a Religious Framework Helps (or Hurts) You
By Marie A. Davidson, Ph.D.
We just celebrated Easter and Passover, the timing of which coincided this year. Both spring holidays bring to mind renewal and birth, or rebirth.
Most, though not all of us, grew up with a connection to a religion. If you did, and even if you have decided it is not as meaningful to you now as an adult, it still matters. If you did not grow up "religious," you knew friends who did and you wondered about it. Somehow, it does matter for most of us, even if it is the "big picture" questions-Why are we here? What are we here for? What happens after we cease to exist? How do religious principles guide us in our lives? How much do they influence us in our life decisions? These are the "biggies" of philosophical life questions, and, if we struggle with infertility, they become even bigger. Read more.

The Flesh and the Spirit
By Ken Mosesian, Executive Director, The American Fertility Association
The intersection of religion and Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) can be a volatile one, and during the past few years, The AFA has been receiving an increasing number of calls and emails on the subject. People want to know what their religion has to say about the issue.
At first, it may seem odd. Why call a non-religious fertility organization to find out the stance of your religion as it relates to ART? Read more

The American Fertility Association's Love Letter Campaign In Support of National Infertility Awareness Week
Once upon a time, a trip to the mailbox required that you step away from your computer.
Sometimes nestled among the bills you would find a colorful, hand written envelope with a special stamp on it and this would be the letter you would eagerly open first. Like a gift, this personal note or card could impact upon your day in a way that email rarely could.
The American Fertility Association wants you to have this experience again. In unity with our community for National Infertility Awareness Week®, we invite you to opt in to our Love Letter Campaign. This is your opportunity to send a letter of support to another person who is trying to conceive, just like you. Read more.
