Just before noon on the Friday before Christmas 2009, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced a new report showing a 50% increase in autism between two birth cohort years - 1994 and 1996. This study reflects another released in October by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which found the rate of autism now 1 in 91 children, and 1 in every 58 boys. At this pace, in two more years autism will have risen to 1 in every 50 children.
The head of autism research at the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Tom Insel, had an epiphany: “There is no question that there has got to be an environmental component here.” So, regarding the environment and autism…what changed from 1994 to 1996 - the years the children in the CDC study were born - which would cause 50% more healthy toddlers, who are reaching all developmental milestones on time, to suddenly regress into autism and exhibit signs of toxicity and environmental illness?
One theory rests on the following: this latest increase in autism came at a time when the number of vaccines went from 18 to 36, and mercury has continued to accumulate in our air, water, soil and food supply. In addition to the number of vaccine products doubling for children, the amounts of mercury and other toxins like aluminum in those products at that time tripled. The 1992 introduction of the mercury-containing Hepatitis B vaccine series tripled the amounts of injected mercury, and also included a dose recommended at birth - a novel step never taken before. While there is plenty of research into the profit margins of these products, there are no studies showing how injecting an infant with a confirmed neurotoxin is beneficial to their health and prevents disease.
But a September 2009 study did show what happens to newborn primates when they receive a single mercury-containing Hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Those infants demonstrated clear and significant abnormal early neurodevelopmental responses. With autism now affecting 1 in every 91 human children, shouldn’t we expect precaution and further investigation from government health officials? The CDC remains unwavering in their recommendation that pregnant women, infants, and children receive not one, but two different types of flu vaccine, both with full dose mercury. This firm determination comes despite the recommendation for full removal of mercury back in 1999, despite a lack of safety testing, and despite studies showing the potential for harm.
The director of the CDC during the decade that autism skyrocketed (2002-2009) remained a consistent defender of mercury in vaccines. Dr. Julie Gerberding refused precaution maintaining loyalty to the rigorous vaccine product schedule for infants and children. Gerberding will now take official employment with the vaccine manufacturer Merck as of January 2010. Her new job title? Dr. Julie Gerberding, President of Merck Vaccines. The new CDC director, Thomas Frieden, stresses H1N1 vaccine product safety.
