Destroying Women From The Inside Out….

There are certain stories that leap out from the headlines....this was one of them...it is the story of a special kind of rape that is happening on a daily basis...in the Congo.
Yes..the Congo...far from our homes..but we need to take notice...because this is happening there, in Latin America, in the Middle East and even here. What is happening in the Congo is that these groups of men are not only raping these women who range in age from three years to the elderly...but they are purposely targeting the reproductive potential of the women that they call the enemy.
They are deliberately putting wood..and sharp objects deep into these young woman’s bodies..so that they cannot have children. Please read the article in full here Rape Epidemic Raises Trauma of Congo War. This is violence against women at it’s deepest level...another form of genocide. It may be a tribe, an ethnic group, a religious order or simply the community which holds the natural resources. But zeroing in on women and girls of all ages is using them as a sacrifice in the war against their neighbor, kin, and countrymen.
Last weekend I attended a woman’s circle...and eight of the 25 women in this circle, right there in the United States...in NYC...had experienced some kind of sexual assault.
One woman said..."I hate my vulva...because even though on some level this part of me can give me pleasure...if I did not have it...if I could have cut it away...I would have...because if I didn’t have this part of me...the abuse that I suffered for four years as a child would not have happened to me.”
Yes..the Congo...Yes...NYC....we have to work together to stop this destruction of women from the inside out.
Perhaps today is the day that everyone makes a contribution today to Amnesty Internationals Stop Violence Against Women’s Project… Do it now. Sometimes supporting the work of others is the best that we can do.
