It’s your first IVF cycle and you’re feeling pretty good about the chances of conceiving. Or you’re heading into your second cycle and your confidence is getting shaky.

Or...you may be looking at third party reproductive options such as donor egg....and all of a sudden...it may occur to you and your partner...that perhaps adoption is also a possibility....

You may be at any point on that assisted reproductive continuum when you begin contemplating another family-building option: adoption. Thinking about it is a wise move. And...November IS National Adoption Awareness Month....

Educate yourself early and well, the experts say, before and during infertility treatment.

It may be hard to wrap your mind around adoption while you’re in the throes of pursuing a genetically linked baby. But all of us have a breaking point when the stretch and stress—emotionally, physically, financially and socially—of one more IVF cycle feels intolerable.

And...for some people...thinking of adoption as a family building option comes much sooner...and they never attempt medical intervention.....

No matter where you are...making the transition to adoption happens over time. It can be a gradual decision rather than a “ah ha” moment. That is why The American Fertility Association offers adoption information to you -when you might not even be thinking about it yet. But bringing you this information is important - supporting you in considering adoption is a vital component to our mission.

We have a great fact sheet on adoption...it’s called...Shifting Gears: The Adoption Option.

I highly recommend that no matter where you are in the process of building your family that you just stick you little pinkie toe in the water...and give it a read.

There are many wonderful organizations such as The Adoptive Parents Committee that also can support you in exploring adoption...Spend time with parents who have adopted, attend workshops. And do the groundwork together with your partner. Family-building requires that both of you are candid and working toward the same goal.

Adoption is another way to build your family. It is not second best. It is just a different path. Maybe it is time to simply take a peek.....
