| [Tue Feb 12 13:49:33 PST 2008] | ny_april | I think this is where I can ask questions tonight, but I've never done this before. In any case, my husband and I are trying our second IVF transfer (frozen this time) in a little over a week. We have 12 frozen day-5 blasts. Our current doctors always use AZH with frozen (and also used it with our fresh). I was pregnant the first time, but lost it around the time we should have seen a heartbeat on ultrasound. I also had a lot of fluid cysts in the endometrium during the last week. The doctor we got a second opinion from says we used a lot more estrogen than he would (I had 6mg estradiol vaginally, plus .2 mg estradiol injections. My endometrium was at 2 sonometers at transfer, and this other doctor prefers .8 sonometers at transfer. Last week I was at .8 sonometers, and they want me to increase my estrogen from 1mg estrace/day to 4mg. I'm concerned that will be too much endometrium. |
| [Tue Feb 12 13:52:27 PST 2008] | ny_april | By the way, the estradiol injections were weekly, not daily. We also need to decide whether we'll allow them to do AZH, and whether we'll thaw 3 embryos or just 2. (They're from donor eggs-I had ovarian cancer when I was 19). Our "second opinion" doctor said he never uses AZH with blastocysts, because there's too much risk of damaging the embryo when it's that developed. I guess we're just looking for a third opinion. Thank you! April in New York. |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:03:35 PST 2008] | christalp | I am gearing up to start another fresh cycle. Sometimes I think I am ready. Other times I don't feel so sure. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:03:51 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Who's your doc? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:03:58 PST 2008] | Karen | Hello how are you |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:04:24 PST 2008] | christalp | I am in NC. Dr. Richard Wing. He is one of the best if not the best in NC |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:04:30 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Hi Karen. Happy to be home. I was in SF yesterday. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:04:42 PST 2008] | hoping | Hi all. I am starting a fresh cycle ivf this week so i can relate! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:04:49 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | You know our helpline coordinator, Lisa, lives in NC. I'll have to ask her about him. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:04:59 PST 2008] | Luna | I just had another IUI cycle and will be able to test on Monday to see if it worked |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:05:03 PST 2008] | christalp | Please do. I didn't know that. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:05:26 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Good luck Luna. I hope you get the result you're hoping for. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:05:41 PST 2008] | Luna | Thank you. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:05:57 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | How many IUI's have you done? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:00 PST 2008] | hoping | wasn't the SF event this weekend? How was it? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:13 PST 2008] | Luna | The hormones have made me so moody. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:18 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | chris, i feel as u do- i am beginning a FET cycle and i vary from feeling ready to definitely not ready, but the show must go on! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:19 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | It was amazing. People were blown away by the quality of the speakers. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:27 PST 2008] | Luna | I have had one before which was successful but ended in a m/c |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:06:39 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Luna, the hormones made me INSANE. I had one mis too. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:07:14 PST 2008] | christalp | Tenaya I agree. I don't know if enough will ever be enough |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:07:15 PST 2008] | Luna | I've had three m/c and our insurance won't cover IVF so we are really hoping for the best |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:07:43 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Do you know why you miscarry? Has your doctor addressed that? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:07:53 PST 2008] | christalp | Luna I wish you the best. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:08:29 PST 2008] | Luna | That seems to be a mystery so far. They found I was hetero for MTHFR and I have stage 4 endo which I had a lap for in 9/06 |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:08:32 PST 2008] | Karen | I am going to say good luck and good night to all I have moved on to the adoption scene. Still like to join the chats to see what is happening |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:08:37 PST 2008] | Luna | Thank you Chris |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:08:41 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | that is 1 big question on my mind tonite--how do i handle knowing that for us, this will be our last chance at ivf. i feel so much pressure to be "perfectly ready", and yet perfection is impossible, yet i still struggle w/ the decision "am i ready enough"? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:08:45 PST 2008] | hoping | Corey, i wonder if you or others can help in making a case for more coverage of employer owned insurance? Also in a state that has laws that shoudl help with insurance |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:09:06 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | endo and miscarriage do often go together, unfortunately. IVF was originally "invented" for endo patients |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:09:34 PST 2008] | hoping | Hey Karen--we are adopting, too. domestic or international for you? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:09:44 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Insurance advocacy is something that we do try to do, state by state. It is very difficult. We had an impact in NJ, but other than that, it has been an uphill climb |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:09:52 PST 2008] | tacori25 left. | |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:12 PST 2008] | Luna | I live in NJ but my insurance cover won';t cover IVF, is that legal? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:33 PST 2008] | Karen | looking into domestic I am 42 and did 2 rounds of ivf and artificial |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:37 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | tenay, how old are you? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:42 PST 2008] | Luna | Karen, my husband and I just started our homestudy also so that we can have our options open |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:43 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | 45 |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:10:58 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | ok. Are you doing IVF with your own eggs? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:11:11 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | with an incredible gift of donated embryos |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:11:24 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | that sure is. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:11:30 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | I hope it works for you kiddo |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:11:40 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | we had done 3 ivfs -the last 1 2 years ago w/ own our genetics |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:11:43 PST 2008] | Luna | Best wishes to you tenay...sending much positive energy your way |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:18 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | tenay, so this will be your first cycle with the donated embies? and welcome GIgi. Hi! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:19 PST 2008] | tallgoldi | or anyone else's for that matter |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:29 PST 2008] | Gigi | Hey all |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:32 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | the transfers did not take. doc said it could be age of our eggs or...my body not accepting the embryos b/c of immune issues or ? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:36 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | I think the shared risk programs can be great, Shady Grove in particular has a terrific reputation |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:12:55 PST 2008] | christalp | tenaya i don't think you can ever be perfectly ready for IVF. I wish you the best |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:00 PST 2008] | cj joined. | |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:03 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | so now we have this 1-time gift of embryos...and we are praying, praying praying... |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:10 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | tenayagirl, the transfers were your own eggs? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:15 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | yes |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:52 PST 2008] | christalp | when is your transfer tenaya? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:53 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | no way to know for sure, but the most likely scenario is an age related one. But it can be so many things. You didn't do pgd I assume? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:13:58 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | i just struggle with the question that if it was my body and not the quality of the embryos themselves, will i be able to have success this time? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:14:07 PST 2008] | Gigi | good luck tenayagirl |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:14:26 PST 2008] | Karen | best of luck to all my prayers are with each and every one of you |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:14:43 PST 2008] | cj left. | |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:14:50 PST 2008] | christalp | thank you Karen. Good luck with the adoption. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:15:00 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Some of this can really be addressed by an RE and some of it can't. Best thing you can do is be with an RE with good stats who you trust for the right reasons, and the rest is a crap shoot - alot like parenthood in general! Hang in there love. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:15:01 PST 2008] | Gigi | I'm in the same boat as tenayagirl, except I've move on to donor eggs |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:16:47 PST 2008] | tallgoldi | Yes, first one with the RE that does IVF. We've been doing IUI with my OB |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:21:28 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | we didn't do pg, but i had repro immune test (controversial) and they said i had too many natural killer cells, so i even did IVIG infusions, but my counts went higher, not lower! so i have that stress in my mind, but this time i will not do alll those extreme things, just try to stay healthly, be positive and trust |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:31:48 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | It's very painful. And family often can't figure out how to help, even though they want to. It's tough on relationships |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:32:18 PST 2008] | christalp | It is very hard on relationships |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:32:26 PST 2008] | Luna | Most definitely, my husband has been great but it was hard after each m/c men grieve so differently |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:33:01 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | They want you to be happy and can't give you what you want. And if it goes on too long, people have trouble hanging in ther with you, even if they love you. It's a lot like having a terminal illness. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:33:17 PST 2008] | christalp | Luna, I totally agree. It took 3 attempts for my DH to figure out just a fraction of what I was feeling. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:33:42 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Men DO grieve differently. A therapist who once gave a chat said that men are defensively optimistic and women are defensively pessimistic. That rang to true for me. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:05 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | jsherm, i would think egg donation has higher succes rate, if u r using hubby's sperm in a fresh cycle. donor embryos r frozen' |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:23 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | still, i hope... |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:31 PST 2008] | Luna | i agree. It's hard for them to really relate since it's not their bodies - even if they try |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:40 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | donor embies are fresh unless the donor you are working with had left over and you paid to store them |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:53 PST 2008] | helene | I am finding one of the hardest parts with all of this is when close friends or family becomes pregnant. My husband and I have been trying for 2 years. We are getting ready to start IVF in March. I am very nervous and worried, but READY. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:34:55 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | It's just different. Men and women are different, usually. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:35:17 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | it's ok to be worried and nervous. File that under duh! Makes sense to me. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:35:26 PST 2008] | helene | YEP! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:35:38 PST 2008] | nike1297 | To me it feels like everyone is getting pregnant aroud me but me. I want to catch that BUG! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:35:38 PST 2008] | Luna | I know I have missed so many baby showers and christenings because it's too hard |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:35:52 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | I shielded myself from a lot of those situations too. Still not sure if that was better or worse. |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:36:29 PST 2008] | helene | I think I am definitely "defensively pessimistic". I am so worried it just won't work. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:36:29 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Hi sdoitmann, welcome |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:36:31 PST 2008] | Luna | well I finally went to one and had a hard time until I met another woman in a similar situation and we chatted the whole time |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:36:52 PST 2008] | nike1297 | How do overcome that deep feeling of feeling like an outsider and depression setting in when you are around soooo many people with little ones and pregnant and such. I am having a hard time coping. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:36:52 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | there IS a definite connection between stress and fertilty, and mind/body techniques are great, but i have found 1 can also be overly focused on being "POSITIV" and get oneself into a worried state if they have the occasional negative thought--that's crazy-making! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:37:04 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | oh me too. In so many areas of my life. But I'm aware of it now, and try not to do it because in a way it's lying to yourself about what you are hoping and dreaming for. Hard. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:37:05 PST 2008] | Luna | It's hard to be optimistic sometimes because you worry so much - especially because of previous losses |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:37:37 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Luna, of course. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:37:45 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | oh chris, that's hard |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:37:59 PST 2008] | helene | Do all of you feel like me, where I do NOT talk to anyone about this but a few people? There are some of my closest friends who have no idea what I'm going through (some of them are pg now anyway!). I don't know why I feel this way, but I am intensely personal about it. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:38:06 PST 2008] | nike1297 | That is very hard. |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:40:42 PST 2008] | helene | yes, that is the worst! I am 32years old, and several people I work with say to me, "you better get cracking if you want kids!" they have NOOOO idea... |

I think Dr's have a hard time "getting it". you know? I think unless you go through it, pp just dont know. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:41:38 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Luna, it's a big deal to us at the AFA - the Latin thing. We are looking at how to address that this year. Fact sheets, conferences with a spanish speaking track, that sort of thing. It is so important. I should give a chat for mother in laws!!!!! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:41:51 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | e, pls give us the title and author of the luna yoga book- thanks! |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:42:15 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Ob Gyns are not for getting you pregnant, sorry to say that. Some of them are amazing. But if you are not getting the appropriate tests, get out of there. |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:42:55 PST 2008] | helene | I have a question for all of you... Have you heard of the SCSA test for DNA fragmentation in the sperm cells? They say that can affect the outcome of IVF if the fragmentation index is high... this is a new thing to me. I'd never heard of it! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:42:59 PST 2008] | Gigi | sure was 42 here moving on to donor eggs |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:43:31 PST 2008] | nike1297 | I agree but even just the basic test of knowing if it was a thyroid issue, she was clueless. I am at a fertility clinic in Brooklyn now and They Get it! It's such a roller coaster |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:43:39 PST 2008] | christalp | Helene, my dr. just recommended that for us. My DH did it last week. No results yet |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:43:49 PST 2008] | helene | The DFI is supposed to be below 30%. My husband's is around 25%. Is this worrisome or is there something we can do? Do you know, Corey? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:43:51 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Nike, this is important. Who are you seeing? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:44:30 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Helene, I don't know, sorry. Again, I don't have the medical backbone you need. Please post on the general medical board, same rules. If you don't get an answer within 48 hours, let me know. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:44:43 PST 2008] | helene | thanks, will do |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:45:15 PST 2008] | nike1297 | I am seeing Dr. Kofinas in Brooklyn NY. They have a private section in Methodist Hospital. They are amazing. Their site is: www.kofinasfertility.com/infertility |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:45:20 PST 2008] | helene | Luna, what i have found is this WHOLE infertility saga is a waiting game! from the 2ww, to results, etc. its awful! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:45:20 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | no. It's close to too high but you're ok |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:46:06 PST 2008] | helene | another question for all of you... how important is the CD10 FSH, after doing the clomid challenge? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:46:21 PST 2008] | Luna | Helene...I know its down right torturous at times and you try to keep positive but when you fail or suffer a loss it's a punch right in the gut |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:48:03 PST 2008] | helene | my RE told me antral follicle count was one of the things they look at, along with FSH, to determine ovarian reserve |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:48:12 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | afc is one indicator only |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:50:58 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | corey, may i ask? what was the outcome of your fertility journey? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:05 PST 2008] | helene | AND a great glass of wine! one of the only plusses to NOT being pg!!! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:06 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | If you had known me when I was on lupron....oy! |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:22 PST 2008] | nike1297 | I have a question... I have a major issue with ovulation, i mean major. I have never felt my right ovary ovulate and this morning I had that distinct cramping on the right side. What could that mean? I also on Monday was in agony with major pain above my belly button for about one hour. What do you think is going on? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:40 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | I have ivf twins. Actually, they are surviving triplets. I had a second trimester miss but went on to deliver the other two, very prematurely. They will be 13 in June. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:55 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | wow-incredible journey |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:51:59 PST 2008] | helene | are you running fever? keep in mind, your appendix is on your lower right. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:52:23 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | Nike, that could be something or nothing. You should get a sono. It could be ovulation after a long anovulatory time, it could be gas, it could be anything. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:52:31 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | yup. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:52:31 PST 2008] | helene | wow, Corey, you are a success story to keep in mind. what was the "issue" for your infertility? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:52:35 PST 2008] | christalp | Corey that is wonderful. You had PCOS, right? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:53:03 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | yup. That is why I beat everyone over the head about diet and excercise. If I had been low carb I don't think I would have needed IVF |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:53:15 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | PCO can reall be controlled |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:53:39 PST 2008] | sdoltmann | how can it be controlled? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:53:39 PST 2008] | nike1297 | I think i was yesterday when I started feeling the pain again but then it went away with mortin. I feel ok today. I just find it very weird and I havent once again gotten my P yet I am not preg. We are in the no sex stage to preserve sperm. I am so stressed out with everything my body is going through |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:53:42 PST 2008] | e left. | |

| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:19 PST 2008] | helene | anyone on the board have male factor infertility issues? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:27 PST 2008] | sdoltmann | yes |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:36 PST 2008] | helene | if so, what is it? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:38 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | a good place to learn about going low carb is atkinscenter.com. If you lower your carb intake, you will most likely begin to ovulate on your own. Lowering your carb intake is not the same as lowering your caloric intake. And you must exercise. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:53 PST 2008] | nike1297 | good to know. thanks |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:54:55 PST 2008] | jsherm62 | low carb could help if I changed my diet? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:55:20 PST 2008] | sdoltmann | high male hormone (not really sure of the appropriate terms) |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:55:30 PST 2008] | jsherm62 | thanks i'll look into it. |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:55:31 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | insulin resistance is a sister to pco. All pcoer's who are eating sugar have insulin resistance. So listen. insuline resistance triggers your hormonal system to produce more testosterone. The rest is history |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:55:32 PST 2008] | ny_april | Hi, Everyone. I'm sorry to butt in, but I have a question and we have to decide this tonight. We're starting our second cycle from donor eggs (I had ovarian cancer when I was 19) and our doctor "always" uses AZH with frozen embryos, because the embryonic wall is thicker when frozen, but another doctor we really liked (but can't use right now for insurance issues) says he NEVER uses AZH with blastocysts, because of the risk of damaging them. Does anyone know anything about this? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:02 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | what is AZH |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:07 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | ny april, that is a tough call. What state do you live in? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:10 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | is that assisted hatching? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:47 PST 2008] | sdoltmann | thats the word, testosterone |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:47 PST 2008] | tenayagirl | if they are frozen as day 3 embryos it should be ok, right? |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:56:47 PST 2008] | ny_april | jersey, but the doctor's in ny. Yes, Assisted Zona Hatching, where they put a tiny hole in the embryo wall to help it implant. They used it with our fresh eggs too, and that didn't go well |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:57:05 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | helene, I did. truly a third of infertility is male |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:57:09 PST 2008] | ny_april | they're day 5 blastocysts |
| [Tue Feb 12 17:57:15 PST 2008] | Corey_Whelan | who are the two docs? |

| [Tue Feb 12 18:04:13 PST 2008] | Luna | the waiting is so hard and even a positive test will bring more worry. I've had 3 m/c last one was twins at 10 weeks |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:04:44 PST 2008] | Luna | I am trying to stay positive |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:04:49 PST 2008] | frances1 | Stay positive. I am much older than anyone on this panel and my doctors all basically thought I was crazy to try IVF. I tried three times and the third attempt has given me three embryos. They had to be frozen thought, because I need a gestational carrier. I have had many years of problems with my uterus - adenomyosis, endo, fibroids, miscarriages, etc.. But this is proof there is hope. I don't know what the outcome is. Be positive though, it helps the journey and makes it a little bit easier. |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:05:28 PST 2008] | ny_april | I'm actually in NJ now too. When I miscarried the first time, the first thinf I thought of was how hard it was going to be to go through all those weeks of tests and ultrasounds. I hear what you're saying, and tyr to stay positive, but I know how hard it is. |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:05:44 PST 2008] | jsherm62 | are you lunatoo ivf connections? |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:06:03 PST 2008] | Luna | thanks frances, that helps I have similar issues, endo, fibroids, MTHFR, insulin resistance, Luteal phase problems and on and on |
| [Tue Feb 12 18:06:03 PST 2008] | ny_april | I mean I try to stay positive, not saying you should |
