Lisa_Rosenthal Hi TLeeR1, thanks for joining us this evening!
TLeeR1 Hello! Hope I'm in the right place?? LOL
Lisa_Rosenthal If you are looking for The American Fertility Association online educational session, you are in the right place. Now that is a mouthful....
  nyiap joined
TLeeR1 Ok, good, I'm in the right place! I have not joined in one of these yet, but received the email today and thought I would try,
Lisa_Rosenthal nyiap, good to see you again.
nyiap thanks..I just found out yesterday I am pregnant...3rd IVF
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, tonight's session is a little unusual, in that it is just us this evening- NO DOCTORS- so we get to just chat.

TLeeR1 Congrats nyiap!
TLeeR1 how exciting!

Hi Everyone! I am Lori Masi the AFA's Patient Advocate! Welcome!
Lisa_Rosenthal nyiap, hopefully, it will rise just as it's supposed too and everything will continue to go well. I'll check the boards, so please post.
nyiap I will, and thank you, these boards have been very helpful
local [332]  Just Us - With Lisa Rosenthal, M.A., Educational Coordinator for The American Fertility Association
Lisa_Rosenthal I love the message boards... I hope everyone uses them...
Catherine Lisa, Could you please introduce yourself? Do you have a degree in counseling? What family building methods are you familar with?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Don't forget me Lisa - I'm here too!
Lisa_Rosenthal Hi Catherine, this is peer support, not mental health counseling, we do have sessions with mental health professionals, but this is not one of them....
Lisa_Rosenthal This is for us to just hang out, chat, compare notes, help, complain, and LAUGH a little, I hope.
Catherine What family building methods are you familar with to compare notes?
Lisa_Rosenthal And Lori Masi, who has introduced herself, thank goodness....
Lisa_Rosenthal Me personally?
Lori_Masi

Welcome All! Please call the AFA Toll Free Support/Referral Line at 888-917-3777 for information, a referral in your area or just some good ol fashioned support. Looking forward to hearing from all of you! Lori Masi – AFA Patient Advocate

Catherine do you have a specific questions about different options?
Catherine How do people feel about egg donors? Has anyone used one?
Lisa_Rosenthal I have had IUI's, GIFT, IVF, FET. As educational coordinator for The AFA, I have about 15 years of experience with adoption, surrogacy, third party reproduction, same sex fertility issues. You name it, and in the last 15 years, we've talked about it
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Catherine when you ask about "people" feeling about egg donors which people are you referring to?
Lisa_Rosenthal Egg donor is a wonderful, viable option for a certain population. There are many, many reputable egg donor agencies...
nyiap I think if you need to use an egg donor and still can use your husbands sperm then you are lucky....I've heard the success rate is pretty high right?
Lisa_Rosenthal nyiap, how long have you been in treatment?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Yes, the success rate is quite high because you are taking the age related issues out of the cycle by using "young" eggs
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, how did you hear about tonight's session?
TLeeR1 I received an email....
  Daniel joined
nyiap I started with my 1st IVF in November, then February, both did not result in pregnancy until now. Tried for one year on our own prior to that
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, and where are you in treatment?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Hi Daniel!
Daniel Hello
Lisa_Rosenthal Welcome Daniel, thanks for joining us this evening.
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Welcome!
TLeeR1 new to this...been fighting the fertility battle for over 5 years now, but we thought it was going to be something minor until recently,
Daniel Why thank you Lisa - did you get my message on Monday early afternoon?
  Jenn2004 joined
Lisa_Rosenthal Yes, Daniel, been a busy week. Sorry.
Jenn2004 hi everyone smile
nyiap TLeeR1...are you seeking treatment?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Welcome Jenn!
Lisa_Rosenthal Jenn2004, thanks for joining us this evening!!
TLeeR1 I was diagnosed with PCOS, which thankfully is treatable...went through treatment for the that, rounds of clomid and nothing, finally discovered DH has low motility, and started going to fertility clinic....
local [332]  Just Us - With Lisa Rosenthal, M.A., Educational Coordinator for The American Fertility Association
TLeeR1 did IUI
TLeeR1 nothing
TLeeR1 and DH's motility came back at 0 last month
TLeeR1 so now looking into IVF
Catherine It is discouraging to try and then have a cycle fail.
nyiap TleeR1...we have a severe male factor, we used IVF with ICSI and I finally got pregnant..it is not a lost cause at all
Daniel TL I am sorry to hear that but it is good that you are now looking into IVF
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Nyiap Congratulations!
TLeeR1 Well, that's what the dr. told us this last week...she said she thinks it will be successful with IVF
Lisa_Rosenthal Male Factor is very treatable, and Daniel can really address that issue.
nyiap thanks Lori
TLeeR1 but now battling with how to pay for it
Daniel Why - yes I can
Daniel TL that is usually the hardest part
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, are you seeing a Reproductive Endocrinologist and an Urologist who specializes in reproductive medicine?
TLeeR1 yes, we are seeing both,
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Catherine I have had some experience with patients using donor eggs, do you have some questions? Please feel free to ask and if I can't answer I will tell you.....
local [332]  Just Us - With Lisa Rosenthal, M.A., Educational Coordinator for The American Fertility Association
Catherine Is having an egg donor easier on the woman receiving the eggs than IVF?
Lisa_Rosenthal Lori, can you answer that one?
Jenn2004 my dh had a sperm analysis that came back low sperm count, I believe it was 5.5 million /ml, he went to a urologist, but all he did was suggest blood work that told us dh has low testosterone. But other than that, he has not suggested us do anything other than dh quit smoking, and start taking vitamins. What other kinds of treatment are there for men?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Yes, very much so because you will be taking a minimum amount of meds where the donor takes all the stimulation drugs!
Catherine Where can you find an egg donor?
TLeeR1 Jenn.....My DH saw a normal Urologist who did not seem to recommend a whole lot, so our rep endo recommended seeing a urologist that particulary specializes in fertility...not all do
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Most IVF programs have a donor pool as well as some agencies that I can refer to you
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Catherine where are you located?
Catherine Alexandria, VA
Lisa_Rosenthal One of the things that Lori does best is Doctor referrals... Please make sure that you call her at our toll free number and she will help you~ but not right this second!!! LOL
Jenn2004 How do you know when they speicailize in fertility? Or is it just something you have to ask?
TLeeR1 My rep endo recommended one...
TLeeR1 actually recommended several,
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Ok there are IVF programs as well as independent agencies, just give me a call tomorrow for some referrals! But please feel free to continue now with your questions....
Jenn2004 Oh ok, well I have not seen a rep endo yet. My insurance doesn't cover anything to do with infertility, so we have been reluctant to go that path just yet.
TLeeR1 but is a large fertility clinic and they have some in their practice,
TLeeR1 We've been very fortunate with our insurance...there is no way we would be to this point without it...but we have a lifetime max and we've almost reached it, so from here on out, we haven't decided on the funding part
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate

Lisa_Rosenthal Jenn, if there is one piece of advice that I can give you, it's to see a RE. They have the expertise that you need and will probably cut the amount of time that you need to be in treatment.
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Jenn also please try to ask if they are Board Cerified!
Jenn2004 When paying out of pocket, how extreme are the costs associated with just daily office visits with an RE?
TLeeR1 I know for our RE's first visit, her consultation fee was $275, just for a visit
Lisa_Rosenthal Jenn, there's no reason to assume that there will be daily costs- many people do not need very advanced treatment....
TLeeR1 They have recommended us to a company that does financing for fertility treatments,
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, the initial consult is very high... and there are ways to finance treatment.
Catherine What company if it is ok ask?
Jenn2004 The reason I ask is my reg. ob/gyn has told me my next course for me is an hsg, but his cost is 1200. And unfortunatly at this time I can not come up with that large of a lump sum. I wanted to do the payment plan, but doing it that way ends up costing like 2000 :(
Lisa_Rosenthal It can be a real waste of time, which is sometimes precious, depending on age, to stay too long with a ob/gyn
TLeeR1 I will look up the company for you...don't have it in front of me
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Jenn I always tell everyone that if you internist said you have a heart problem you would see a cardiologist - well same thing here - if you suspect a problem you should at least have a consult with a specialist a board certified RE!
TLeeR1 WE have made more advances with our RE this past year, than we did in 5 years with the OB/GYN
Catherine success rates are higher for IVF and donor egg than they were 5-6 years ago. New lab etc.
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, my point exactly. I wasted a year with an OB and frankly it was exhausting in so many ways, emotionally, physically, and I was on medication that had no chance of working for me.
Jenn2004 That definatly does give me something to think about. I always knew in the back of my mind that I should be seeing one by now, (we have not prevented for 3 yrs, and I just finally got insurance coverage in November of 2004) So needless to say, I am ready to move on from my reg. ob/gyn

Jenn2004 thanks Lori, I have written down you number many times in previous chats, but could you please post it again.

Bonnie and peppeer please feel free to jump in and ask questions, make comments etc
Lisa_Rosenthal There are other places for financing as well...
Bonnie128 I am part of the DOH program in NY
Bonnie128 that has really helped
peppeer i am very curious about donor embryos, are their really over 400,000 enbryos being stored and waiting to be destroyed?
local [332]  Just Us - With Lisa Rosenthal, M.A., Educational Coordinator for The American Fertility Association
Bonnie128 is this for medical or non medical questions?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Bonnie what is the DOH program?
Lisa_Rosenthal Peppeer, There may in fact be about 400,000 embryos, but it is not accurate to say that they are "waiting to be destroyed", where did you hear that term?
Bonnie128 Department of Health
Bonnie128 they supplement your income to help you pay for IVF
Lisa_Rosenthal Bonnie, tonight's session is unusual, we do not have a physician with us as is usual.
Bonnie128 ok smile
Lisa_Rosenthal It is a peer conversation.

AFA_Patient_Advocate
Welcome Peachy!
Jenn2004 and do they only help with IVF?
TLeeR1 using the word "grant"....do you have to pay it back?
Bonnie128 I was just wondering, possibly someone here has information, my first IVF ended in a chemical pregnancy, I am doing IVF for the 2nd time in July ... Should I have any other tests done because of the chemical pg?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Jenn what state do you live in?
Lisa_Rosenthal The DOH program is only in NY state, in many other states, there is limited coverage.
Bonnie128 I do not have to pay back the grant
Jenn2004 Texas
Bonnie128 it helps pay for IVF only
Bonnie128 I feel blessed to be able to be part of the grant program
Bonnie128 or I wouldnt never have a chance
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Let me look up TX but I think that you are not a mandated state!
TLeeR1 thanks, definitely worth looking into to see if my state has something similiar...in CA
Jenn2004 hmm, lucky me .
Jenn2004 lol
Lisa_Rosenthal Bonnie, how wonderful to hear that it's being used so wisely. Who are you seeing?
Bonnie128 usually my kind of luck too Jenn lol
Bonnie128 I see Dr. Harry Leiman
Bonnie128 smile
Lisa_Rosenthal You are out of luck, right now in CA!!!
Bonnie128 I love him
Bonnie128 lol
TLeeR1 that figures!
Lisa_Rosenthal Bonnie, you should!!! I love him too.
Bonnie128 at Montefiore Reproductive
Bonnie128 dont tell him I said that though
Bonnie128 hahahhaa
Lisa_Rosenthal Please say hello to him for me, he is a good friend.
Bonnie128 Oh I sure will
Bonnie128 he's the best6
Bonnie128 best smile
Lisa_Rosenthal Were you at the dine with the experts evening that we had with him a few weeks ago?
Bonnie128 yes I was
Bonnie128 were you there?
Lisa_Rosenthal I probably saw you, I was there too!!!

Jenn e mail me you e mail address and contact info and I will send you the insurance info on TX My email is LoriattheAFA@aol.com
Bonnie128 were you outside or at the tables?
peppeer i had a terrible experiance with egg donor , lost all our money and it ws the worst experiance in my life- and now i am really interested in donor embryos, i guess this chat room is not for us---
Lisa_Rosenthal Yep, me.
  peppeer left
Bonnie128 Were you handing out the stuff outside?
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, where in CA are you?
TLeeR1 Northern, SF area
Lisa_Rosenthal There are some truly wonderful programs in that area.
Bonnie128 Its a shame that they dont make it mandatory everywhere, I can't believe that infertility is not covered for all
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
peepeer what info are you looking for?
Bonnie128 its very sad
TLeeR1 We are very happy with our doctor/clinic so far
Bonnie128 I love where I go also
Lisa_Rosenthal Bonnie, you want to hear something interesting? In MA, where there is full coverage, and it is the oldest mandated state in the country?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Jenn did you get my e mail address?
Lisa_Rosenthal Only %16 of couples who are having trouble conceiving seek treatment. It is clearly not only a money issue.
Jenn2004 yes, I just emailed you my info. thanks smile
TLeeR1 thats strange,
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Never mind I see your e mail
Bonnie128 i cant believe that.... if not for this grant here in NY ... I would never have a baby, unless a miracle happened
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
After the session I will send it to you!
Jenn2004 hmm...maybe I should look into moving to MA. smile
TLeeR1 LOL...yea really!
Bonnie128 Dr. Leiman just did a Lap on me 3 weeks ago and removed a polyp from my uterus
Lisa_Rosenthal Jenn, I know that I considered it---LOL
Jenn2004 thanks Lori
Lisa_Rosenthal Did I mention that I love Dr. Lieman?
Bonnie128 hahahaah me too
Jenn2004 yeah Lisa, it is very tempting. lol
Bonnie128 I am hoping besides having male factor, which was the only thing in the beginning, all my other tests were clear, that removing that polyp may have had something to do with me not getting pregnant too
Lisa_Rosenthal It's important to make sure that you are with a program/doctor that you are happy and comfortable with, and that they are superbly qualified.
Bonnie128 Did I mention I love Dr. Leiman?
Bonnie128 hahahahaa
Lisa_Rosenthal How is everyone doing with food and exercise?
Jenn2004 I definatly agree with that Lisa, I have had my share of dr's that make me feel anything but comfortable. And I just refuse to be treated like that anymore.
Bonnie128 I just started acupuncture, which I find to be so weird, still haven't gotten used to it yet
TLeeR1 On Metformin...FOOD??? not a good topic with me right now....LOL!!!
Bonnie128 lol tlee
Lisa_Rosenthal Taking care of yourself during this is so important, it's easy to get depressed and it tends to be a downward spiral. Eating right, sleeping enough and getting moderate exercise are all ways to maximize your chances for pregnancy.
Daniel You are making me hungry - still waiting for dinner
Lisa_Rosenthal TL, you are very funny....
Daniel Lisa would you recomend a 5K perhaps??
Jenn2004 I completely understand TLee, I was put on metformin because my dr thought it would help. Unfortuantly, he should have done more tests before putting me on that medication. It was not for me, for sure.
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Dan you still there - you are too quiet....
Daniel Just lurking a bit
TLeeR1 I'm supposed to take 4 a day....only taking 1 right now, and I'm so sick I can't see straight
Daniel Giving up the Yankee game to be here
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Ut OH!
Lisa_Rosenthal Why yes, Daniel, running/walking a 5K (3.1 miles) is a wonderful, attainable goal. What a great idea.
Bonnie128 WOW
Bonnie128 My husband would never do that
Lisa_Rosenthal Daniel, I always knew that there was something wrong with you!!!
Daniel LISA does AFA sponsor any races??
Bonnie128 Lisa are you from NY?
Bonnie128 Lori?
Daniel Bonnie I am one of a kind smile
Lisa_Rosenthal Bonnie, I live and breathe in CT.
Bonnie128 you sure sound it lol
Bonnie128 oh neat Lisa!
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
I am in NY - born and raised!
Bonnie128 me too Lori smile
Daniel ME TOO
Daniel CT is a nice place to visit but.....
Bonnie128 Hope Daniel is not Dr. Leiman in disguise
Lisa_Rosenthal Good, we have a club. The rest of us states better stick together.
Bonnie128 hahahhaha
Daniel Bonnie I can assure you I am not a doctor - crazy yes, doctor no
Bonnie128 hahahahaah your funny Daniel
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Daniel is definitely not dr Lieman!
Bonnie128 haahha lol
Lisa_Rosenthal Anyone having any trouble with in-laws?
Lisa_Rosenthal insensitive friends?
TLeeR1 OHHH MAN do I EVER!!!!
Bonnie128 wow that was easy
Daniel ALL OF THE TIME - remember what I always say - you don't get to pick your rotten in laws they just come with the package!!!
Jenn2004 When a state mandates coverage, does that mean they make insurance cover all infertility? Or just whatever coverage they decide? And what about states that are not mandated?
TLeeR1 lol
Daniel Now now am experiencing being the parent of my parent and father in law - I swear they act worse then my children
Bonnie128 a mandate from what I have read does not cover all things all the time, like I believe some are mandated to cover diagnostic and some all the way up to IVF
Daniel Jenn - sometime yes and sometimes now it depends on the State
Bonnie128 my insurance covers IUI's & Meds
Jenn2004 hmm...seems so unfair sometimes
Bonnie128 I am lucky but IUI wont work for us with Male Factor
Daniel Jenn - you ain't kidding
Bonnie128 so it goes unused
Bonnie128 It sure does Jenn
Daniel Bonnie is that because there is a motility issue or low sperm count?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
States that are not mandated are just based on whatever your ins covers you for.If the state is mandated it depends on what they mandate as covered!
Bonnie128 only problem really is morphology
Jenn2004 I thought I had read somewhere that if an insurance company offers pre-natal they also have to offer something for inferitilty, even just dianostic, but mine offers pre-natal, but nothing infertiliity.
Daniel Not motility but morphology?
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
That I don't know about... but again I think it depends on what the law in each state says....
Bonnie128 I did IVF last year but had a chemical pregnancy in January. I am hoping because my Dr. found the polyp on my uterus that it may have played a role in not staying pregnant
Bonnie128 motility was always in a good range
Bonnie128 not great
Bonnie128 but good
Daniel Jenn - most ins carriers will cover some basic diagnostic tests so long as they are not coded for "infertiliity" per se
Bonnie128 Morphology ranged from 3-11%
Bonnie128 more at 3%
TLeeR1 Anyone know of causes for low motility??
Bonnie128 been at this for 5 yrs now daniel
Bonnie128 urologist etc...
Jenn2004 I think that was my problem. My dr's office said they would play around with some codes and see what they could do. About 2 days later they called me and left a message on my voice mail saying my insurance doesn't cover anything about infertility. Nice huh?
Daniel Bonnie - everything is realative - what I would give to have what your DH has - me I am a big zero in the sperm count department
Bonnie128 so sorry to hear that Jenn
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
That is always difficult!
Bonnie128 I totally understand Daniel, sorry that you have to suffer from that :(
Bonnie128 that really stinks
Daniel Jenn - then you have a choice stay where you are and pay out of pocket - medical deduction perhaps or change to a practice that will be more accomidating
Lisa_Rosenthal Isn't Daniel wonderful? He is a AFA board member, and is a big help.
Daniel Bonnie - I am well over those kind of issues
Jenn2004 I think we are looking at changing. I don't like my dr to begin with, and everytime I even call their office the first thing they ask me is "are you pregnant" Ugh...I hate that.
Bonnie128 oh awesome! he is a big help
Daniel I was blown away when I was first diagnosed but not anymore - I know the difference between "varility" and "fertility" smile
Jenn2004 I tried explaining to the nurse that I found it very upsetting, but she said it was a standard question they ask everyone before you make an appointment.
Daniel Jenn - it sounds like it is time to change
Lisa_Rosenthal Jenn, time to MOVE ON!!!!!!!!!!
Lisa_Rosenthal I said it first Daniel.
Jenn2004 I agree
Daniel Yes you did
TLeeR1 because they get pregnant people in right away, and everyone else gets put on the back burner.....time to change!
Lori_Masi
AFA_Patient_Advocate
Jenn I agree!
Daniel Also it sounds like they really did not want to bother doing the little extra work concerning the insurance issue - after all it is not their money at stake - been there done that !!!!!!!!
Daniel Bonnie so what is your next move??
Bonnie128 1 more IVF July
Bonnie128 and then I guess thats it
Lisa_Rosenthal A Reproductive Endocrinologist's office does not ask that question. They assume that the reason that you are calling is because you are having trouble getting pregnant. Anyone can say that they specaliaize in infertility, only a RE really does, in any medical way.
Daniel Bonnie - well I guess we should all send you "cyber" hugs
Bonnie128 I am praying it works
Bonnie128 thanks so much Daniel
TLeeR1 our insurance told us they don't pay for "injections not done by the doctor"...so our doctor laughed and said no problem...I can just go in everyday for injections, then she'll be doing them, and they will be the price for her drs visits too, on top of the injections, if they want to be that way.....Point is...it's great to have the doctor on your side and that will help work with you and find the insurance loop holes
Bonnie128 I have faith in my RE smile & I feel comfortable with all the IF stuff now because I have dont it all
Bonnie128 done
Lisa_Rosenthal We love doctors like that TL!!!
