Lisa_Rosenthal Welcome! This evening, learn how physical therapy can decrease pain and improve pregnancy rates without drugs or surgery. Women with blocked tubes, endometriosis, advanced age, unexplained infertility and others may benefit. Your questions will be answered by Mandy Roscow, MPT and Larry Wurn, LMT, directors of Clear Passage Therapies (CPT), a growing network of physical therapy clinics treating female infertility, pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction with a new non-surgical physical therapy treatment.

Lisa_Rosenthal This work began after several of our chronic pain patients, also diagnosed infertile, became pregnant after being treated with this therapy. Since then, over 100 babies have been born to women who were diagnosed "infertile" prior to receiving this therapy. Many had tried multiple medical treatments without success.

Lisa_Rosenthal Researchers estimate 40% of female infertility is due to mechanical causes [e.g. adhesions, scarring, blocked tubes, endometriosis], 40% is due to hormonal or medical factors, and 20% is 'unexplained' (generally thought to be due to one or both of the above). We've had good success treating mechanical causes - the adhesions or scars that form after infection, trauma or surgery. Lately, we have also been tracking some remarkable changes in hormone levels, and are encouraged by successes we have seen in cases of high FSH. Published studies on this therapy report success rates which rival those of more traditional treatment options, with none of the risks or side effects. Data suggests we improve fertilit

Lisa_Rosenthal Please feel free to ask Mr. Wurn questions...
miki I am 41 yrs old and have an issue with thin lining. Will your massage techniques work for thin lining issue?
Lisa_Rosenthal "Physical therapy for infertility" is a relatively new, scientifically researched treatment for some types of female infertility. It addresses the adhesions that form naturally from any infection, inflammation, or surgery. These adhesions can block fallopian tubes, decrease function of the ovaries and/or cervix, decrease the uterine wall's ability to allow implantation, and impair hormonal function. Therapy is designed to break these adhesive bonds and restore normal function. The most appropriate women to receive this work are those who have had any of the following: Infection (bladder, yeast, etc), inflammation (endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, etc.), surgery (D&C, appendec

Larry_Wurn JMD. You may still be appropriate for therapy. It all really depends on your history. If you have had any infection, inflammation surgery or trauma, your body forms adhesions as the first step in the healing process. That is exactly what we treat.

I have already submitted a patient questionairre to clear passages and was approved for therapy. I still haven't talked to my gyn yet, I'm not in a position financially to cover this therapy yet. jules_ny Hi, sorry to repost, thanks for being here.... can you tell me what your success rates are for women going through IVF and also women over 40. thank you.
C_L What if you didn't have any infection, inflammation, surgery or pain, will this treatment still work?I have blocked fallopian tubes.Does it matter where the fallopian tubes are blocked?
jmd How is the 20hr program set-up? all in one week? what is most effective or what do you recommend? does this work with acupuncture?
Mandy_Roscow__MPT jmd, The 20 hours of therapy is spread out typically in one week for those patients who are traveling, which would be 4 huors a day in 5 days. However, for a patient who lives in an area close on one of our clinics, you can break it up as you want to (minimum of one hour at a time). Either way is effective, and we have not seen any difference in the success rates at this point.
Larry_Wurn BG: Medscape General Medicine has published a few of our studies, including two controlled studies. As you may know, it is difficult to conduct controlled studies on an infertile population, because we canot give a "sham" (control) therapy to women who have a limited opportunity to become pregnant.

misti How much therapy is required to see results? I live out-of-state, and saw on your website you have a M-F schedule for out of town guests. What is the cost for this treatment. My insurance does not cover infertility costs.
Larry_Wurn ArchAngel: We hope to open in Scottsdale early to mid-2006.

ArchAngelll Thank you I will be looking forward to it.

Nnacy_Brown Do your studies include studies of accupuncture as well? Do you think that Accupuncture treatments and the physical therapy treatments that you provide are similar?

Janna Hi, are there double blind studies?
Larry_Wurn Miki: We do not have any data on that. We believe that therapy increases blood flow, which can help. We have data on success in older women and those with high FSH, but not on thin lining.

Larry_Wurn Misti: All of our therapy and studies are based on 20 hours of treatment. These can be given in as short as a week (M_F) or spread over as long as six months. Costs are either $4,380 or $5,180, depending on location. Less expensive in rural locatrions & small towns. More in large metropolitan cities.

Mandy_Roscow__MPT DanielBecker, The link between infertility and PT was accidently discovered. Mr. and Mrs. Wurn were treating a few patients for such things as hip and low back pain when they came in reporting they were pregnant. At first, they didn't think there was any connection, but when researching these patient's history found put they had blocked fallopian tubes. After consulting witn an NIH researcer and a GYN, we dsicovered it must be from breaking down adheions.

Larry_Wurn C_L, jmjjchase: Adhesions are the primnary cause of blocked tubes. If your tubes are partially blocked, you likely have tiny adhesions in them. Our successes in blocked tubes include virtually equal amounts of proximal and distal occlusion, as well as some midtubal and bipolar (blocked at both near and far ends).
mary56789 Can this PT treatment improve egg quality?
local [332]  Topic~ Physical Therapy for Infertility: How it Can Help~ with Larry Wurn (Co-Founder, Director of Clinical Studies, Clear Passage Therapies) and Mandy Roscow, (MPT, National Director, Clear Passage Therapies)
Mandy_Roscow__MPT Wendy, The technique is patent- protected. We have been researching and develpoing this treatment for 14 years. Only the therapists that we have trained are doing our technique. Other therapists may be doing similar things, but they do not have the published research that we do to validate our work.
  mkltjl joined
jenhan Is there a range of time the treatment is good for?
Larry_Wurn Mary: Egg quality is an interesting diagnosis. If you are simply older or have high FSH, we have good clinical evidence that we can help. If your eggs have actually been diagnosed to be of poor quality, that is another story. It only takes one good egg, of course.
Wendy Thanks. I have known several people that have seen this individual and have had great success achieving pregnancy, relieving endo pain, etc.
Corey Hi Lisa. Is this private? Type here
jmjjchase OK thanks! Would it be logical to assume that after the treatment, I would need another HSG to confirm? I also have polycystic ovaries, for which my doc required the HSG to allow her to prescribe the Clomid. But, instead I was referred to a fertility specialist. He didn't tell me anything I wanted to here.
jmjjchase My gyn is not concerned w/endometriosis or the small fibroids I have. But, she did say that the area where the fibroids are located would inhibit the growth of a fetus as well as the fluid in the tubes.
Mandy_Roscow__MPT Nnacy_Brown, We do not have any studies that include accupuncture. We believe that the two types of interventions can compliment each other. What we do is very different from accupuncture in that we are trying to create meachnical changes in the body. We are not focused on the flow of chi or the blood, like in Eastern medicine.
Larry_Wurn Jenhan: Therapy appears to last for years. We have had several women who have had two or more sucessive births after therapy. The pre-IVF results are based on a 15 month window (we had to close the study at some point to submit it, so we chose 15 months.)
mkltjl I just joined the chat. I know that your treatment is good for endo which I have. I also have adenomyosis. Does it help with that?
misti Can the treatments be billed under dx such as endometriosis, and not infertility?
darlenesuccess I am concerned about the incision from a myomectomy two years ago. Will the incision interfere with therapy? Will my success rate be affected?

jmjjchase This may sound silly, but what does the therapy feel like?
Lisa_Rosenthal A huge thank you to Mr. Wurn and Mrs. Roscow for sharing this invaluable information with us this evening. We so appreciate it.
Allie51 Does this therapy help if you have pain with sexual intercourse?
Larry_Wurn jmjjchase: We would encourage you to have an HSG after therapy for two reasons: 1) to know if we were successful, and 2) to help flush the tubes after therapy. When we open a tube with a hydrosalpinx, the liquid escapes. In several cases, we have seen natural pregnancies and live births after openingf a tube with a hydrosalpinx (liquid in tube).
  Mandy_Roscow__MPT left
jmjjchase I see, but I think that polycystic ovaries would still be a problem, or can this therapy help that as well?
Larry_Wurn Darlenesuccess: Actually, the incision (surgery) would be a reason to consider therapy, not to avoid it. Surgeries cause adhesions, a primary cause of female infertility.

Larry_Wurn Mary: Low responders to IVF - Great question. In fact, we just completed a study with women who had failed two or more IVFs and never had a pregnancy via IVF. After we treated the, 71% became pregnant and 54% had live births. You can find that dstudy on our website.

Mandy_Roscow__MPT jules_ny, The therapy feels like a deep stretch sensation. It may burn or be uncomfortable at times, similar to being in a difficult yoga position. We ask patients to stay in touch with us as we are treating them to stay within their tolerance.
Lisa_Rosenthal I'm going to post some information that Mr. Wurn and Mrs. Roscow have given me.
Larry_Wurn NNacy_Brown: We do not treat male factor problems. However, we have published one study (available via our website www.clearpassage.com) that shows a 63% increase in IVF Success Rates compared to the national ASRM and CDC norms. So based on that, therapy should have about a 63% increase for most IVF cycles.
