Daniel_Becker Welcome 3sunflower
schuemama I've never "chatted" before, and i'm not sure what "low tech" means, so I amy not participate much, but I'm listening.
Daniel_Becker For those that have just joined us in this room - feel free to ask about anything while we wait for Dr. Assad to come
Lori Thank you
3sunflower Thank you.
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate I am Lori Masi the AFA Patient Advocate and if anyone has any questions while we wait I would be happy to try to answer them
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Welcome Everyone! Please call the toll free AFA Support Line at 888-917-3777 for a referral in your area, information or support!
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - that is fine - low tech refers to the less evasive types of ART
3sunflower Would Clomid and injectables be included in that?
Daniel_Becker When you think about the old notions of BMS (baby making sex) it kind of reminds me of things like IUI
schuemama I going for my first intrauterine insemination this weekend. I think that may be low tech. Mu dh has low sperm count, and so far they haven't found anything wrong with me. We've been trying for almost 3 years.
Daniel_Becker 3sun -- yes it sure could
Lori hmm, this one might not be for me as I've already tried one IVF
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - 3 years is a long time - are you taking any meds along with this IUI cycle
  pdaya joined
Daniel_Becker Lori - you can still ask about any topic
Daniel_Becker Hi Pdaya
Daniel_Becker welcome to "fertility" chat
schuemama No meds. I have a very regular cycle. Am I wasting my $ by doing this w/o meds? No ins coverage for fertility treatments - only diagnosis.
pdaya Hello my name is Pam
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Hi Pam Welcome!
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - no not necessarily - the prudent course of action is usually to try 1 to 3 non medicated IUI cycles but this is also dependant on your age and ovarian reserve factors
Daniel_Becker Hi Pam -- that is easier for me to type
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Welcome Everyone! Please call the toll free AFA Support Line at 888-917-3777 M-F 9 am - 5 pm EST for a referral in your area, information or support!
Daniel_Becker Lori how did your first IVF cycle go??
  2bmummy joined
  maxine joined
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - just currious do you know how low the count is
Lori It was a great learning experience, but not the outcome I wanted
schuemama I'm 32, no children. DH has 16 year old from previous marriage. No history of gyno problems other than mild dysplasia 6 years ago. Always normal paps.
Daniel_Becker Welcome 2b and maxine to the chat, my name is Daniel Becker, I am a board member to the AFA and am gust moderating
Daniel_Becker welcome back hanna
schuemama Dh has had several semen analysis. First one came back 650,000. Under 20 million is low. Second one came back at 6,500,000. Still low, but possible chance to conceive.
Lori I tried FET as well but unsuccessful
2bmummy HI! Are we getting to know each other?
  scoop joined
3sunflower Daniel, are you an RE?
Daniel_Becker Yes I guess so
Daniel_Becker Welcome scoop
2bmummy Ok, my question is about IUI, I just found out that my last cycle of clomid was unsuccessful and our next step is going to be meeting the RE and IUI. What can I expect?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Welcome All - I am Lori Masi the AFA`Patient Advocate and while we are waiting for Dr Assad please feel free to ask Dan or myself any questions that are non medical as we are not doctors.
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - the reason that I ask is - are they doing multiple collection for the IUI or just a single colection for the IUI - also will there be one or two IUI's for this cycle
Lori I'm debating another try or to move onto adoption
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Lori how old are you?
Daniel_Becker 2b what is IUI
schuemama one collection, one iui this cycle.
bsxx I am a new 39 yo married last June, trying since and have a clomid challenge test with day 10 fsh 16 so told to do donor eggs. Sounds like IVF gives ~5% chance so am wondering about trying superovulation drugs and IUI since it is far cheaper - not sure of % chance of success - I believe similar
2bmummy Isn't that the code word for artifical insemination or intrauterine insemination?
Daniel_Becker Schuemama - well I think that is a good first start - who knows you can get lucky with just one cycle - but my guess is that if it does not work you should ask about a medicated cycle
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Please call the toll free AFA Support Line at 888-917-3777 for a referral in your area, information or just some good ‘ol fashioned support!
Daniel_Becker Keep in mind that you may need to repost them as the room is quite busy. You may want to save your questions in a word document instead of having to retype them.
Lori 39, soon to be 40. Eggs retrieved were 6 grade 1, 2 made to blasts stage for fet
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate As I said I am not a doctor but it sounds like your response was good so if you can afford to try again I would consider it!
schuemama I'm praying that it works, but not optimisitic. Will medication just increase my chances of having more eggs available?
  chris joined
Daniel_Becker bsxx - if I understand correctly that your FSH is elevated and therefore you have been advised to do DE - I am not sure what the point would be to use bigger drugs as this will not impact the FSH value
bsxx is one high fsh good enough to say poor ovarian reserve and to give up?
Daniel_Becker schuemama - drugs can do more than that - sure they can increase the number of eggs for ovulation but ovulation can be chemically controlled
2bmummy What does "kow tech" mean?
Daniel_Becker Welcome Cris
schuemama Is there any medication or other treatment for male infertility? Other than IVF? I haven't been able to find anything in my research.
maxine maxine ive had one successful pregnancy with iui but had a miss abortion at 9 weeks. Now iam on a medicated cycle with clomid and have had two unsuccessful iui so far. I donot like the way the medication makes me feel but at 37 years old my chances are lower for a regular pregnancy what do you think i should do.
Daniel_Becker 2b low tech refers to things less than IVF generally
Daniel_Becker schuemama - I have sever male factor and the answer is yes
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Low Tech refers to non medicated cycles of IUI or IUI with a nminimum of drugs
  chris left
Daniel_Becker it depends on what the cause of the problem is - I surely recomend that he see a urologist if that has not been done yet
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Maxine as I mentioned we are not physicians so you need to sit down with your RE and discuss your options
schuemama He's already done that. They initially thought he had varicocele, but ultrasound proved otherwise. Urologist said he couldn't do anything else for him. We didn't like the urologist.
2bmummy How does a low sperm volume influence conception chances?
Daniel_Becker Maxine - so sorry to hear that - clomid is considered the weakest form of drugs for "infertiility" but it also can have nasty side effects - there are other drugs that can be taken but the cost increase is considerable - the main issue is how many eggs you are producing at what dose of medication
Daniel_Becker schuemama - get a second opinion - that is certainly worth while - are his hormone levels "normal"??
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Please call the toll free AFA Support Line at 888-917-3777 for a referral in your area, information or just some good ‘ol fashioned support!
3sunflower How many follicles does one typically produce on Clomid. I have only had 1 good one each cycle, followed by Hcg trigger and IUI and nothing yet...
schuemama Yes. Normal hormone levels.
2bmummy I agree, clomid does have nasty side effects- if clomid is doing it's job- producing quality eggs is it generally continued when doing the iui?
  hanna left
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3sunflower - it varies from cycle to cycle and person to person
Daniel_Becker 3sunflower it depends on the dose - generally from personal experience with my wife I think her RE wanted to see between 1 and 3 durring a cycle
3sunflower I'm up to 200mg!
Daniel_Becker 2b - it depends on the RE
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3 sunflower how many cycles of clomid have you done already?
Daniel_Becker 2b - can you imagine what it was like for my wife and I when we both were taking clomid in a cycle??? smile
3sunflower This is my 3rd.
  Queens_College joined
schuemama db - why were you taking clomid? what does it do for men? increase hormone levels?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3sunflower depening on your age they usually say after 3 cycles you should consider moving on to more aggressive treatment
Daniel_Becker Welcome Queens - my name is Daniel Becker, I am a board member to The AFA and am guest moderating with Lori Masi tonight - we are not doctors but we are experienced so feel free to ask questions and we will give you our lay person oppinion
3sunflower That's my plan for next cycle. I'm 30 so definitely on the younger side, but ready to move on. Plan is to start Gonal-F next month.
  liberati joined
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3 sunflower is that with IUI?
Daniel_Becker schuemama - in my case my factor is caused from a genetic condition that causes low testosterone production and high estrogen production - it was thought that taking clomid perhaps could help sperm production - in my case it did not work
Daniel_Becker Welome Liberati
Daniel_Becker 3Sun - you will like that more than clomid
3sunflower Lori, do you mean the Clomid or the Gonal-F? Both are with IUI.
3sunflower Daniel, why will I like it better?
2bmummy If clomid works, do doctors generally continue with it to iui?
pwtnurse_yahoo.com is the gonal-f an injection?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3 sunflower have they given you a diagnosis as to why? At 30 it is not an age factor so do they know why and btw how long have you been trying?
3sunflower Yes the gonal-f will be an injection.
  Lori left
Daniel_Becker 3sunflower - despite the fact that you will move to injections - there are few if any side effects talked about with Gonal F as comparred to the known and common side efects reported on clomid
liberati HI - I am a little late
schuemama Did anyone have a fear of needles before gonal-f? I just can't imagine doing injections?
3sunflower Lori, I've been trying for almost 2 years. Had one termination at 14 weeks 1 1/2 years ago and a missed miscarriage 1 year ago.
Daniel_Becker Liberati - you are not late the doctor is LATE smile
2bmummy schuemama have you taken clomid? You might welcom needles if you experience the side effects of clomid.
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3 sunflower any diagnosis?
3sunflower Luckily, I haven't had too many side effects from the Clmind--just a few hot flashes.
schuemama No meds yet. First IUI this weekend. I can't look at needles.
3sunflower Lori, no diagnosis as this point.
Daniel_Becker schuemama - of course, I do not think anyone says "great can't wait to inject" but it really is not that bad - in the beggining of our treatment I injected for my wife while I did my one injections but within a short time she was injecting away
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate I never had any side effects with clomid either
Daniel_Becker 3sun - when we were both on it it was like two cats in heat smile
pwtnurse_yahoo.com i have done 7 rounds of clomid with minimal side effects
schuemama I know I sound wimpy. I guess I'll have to wait and see, but i hope I never have to get to that point.
Daniel_Becker like everything else in life - a lot of this is personal experience
2bmummy I feel like an emotional basket case. I hope we change to another med
Daniel_Becker 2b there is good reason why they call "cycling" the roll-a-coster effect
pwtnurse_yahoo.com how many iui's with clomid are normal? i will be doing my 2nd next week
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate pwtnurse after 7 rounds I would suggest speaking to your RE about moving on - you don't want to take too many cycles of clomid
Daniel_Becker although when we were in treatment it was not even the ups and downs that were so bad it was the wait between cycles that seemed so bad
2bmummy pwtnurse- how many iui's with clomid have you done?
Daniel_Becker pw - generally 3 seems like the magic number
3sunflower Does one wait between cycles of injectables?
liberati I am on my 3 rd cycle of clomid +HCG shot+IUI. My doc gives us3-4 tries on Clomid before we move to injectibles
Daniel_Becker 3sun it depends on RE - some don't other like to see 1 to 2 periods between
3sunflower Liberati, I am in the same place you are.
Daniel_Becker Liberati that sounds reasonable to me as the lay person smile
scoop Type here
bsxx Has anyone considered accupuncture and traditional chinese medicine?
Daniel_Becker Hi scoop try again
scoop Does anyone know where the doctor is?
2bmummy I did two clomid only (and got a cyst), waited two months and did clomid with HCG and now will be moving on to iui but I don't know if that will be with clomid or what. I will meet the RE next week.
pwtnurse_yahoo.com the 7 cycles have been spread out some, my biggest problem is that I live in an extremely rural area and there are no real specialists closer than 400 miles so we are doing what we can, i have only done 1 iui with clomid, i have mild endo but no other reasons, we have been trying for 3 years
Daniel_Becker bsxx I have known others to go to alternative meds
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate To anyone that has just joined us Dan Becker Board Member of the AFA and myself Lori Masi AFA~Patient Advocate are substituting for the doctor so we are trying to answer your questions with our non medical lay person opinions. So feel free to ask away, we are both very expereienced infertiltity patients.
3sunflower Is the doctor not coming tonight?
Daniel_Becker 2b raise concerns or other issues or questions with your RE that is what he/she is there for!
scoop I have a question about the cost of the medications?
maxine maxine> I have also noticed that my cycle has changed alot after the miscarriage and also since taking clomid is this nornal.
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate We are not sure what happened with Dr Assad
Daniel_Becker 3sun - it does not appear that he is but look how lucky you are to have me and Lori:)
3sunflower I definitely am!
Daniel_Becker maxine - yes
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate pwtnurse how old are you?
pwtnurse_yahoo.com 28
Daniel_Becker many things can effect your cycle from what I know about my wife - including stress!
Daniel_Becker PW oh to be 28 again
schuemama Since we are just staring down the road with ART, how much do people pay for IUI's, IVF? meds, etc? Does anyone have insurance that pays for this? Just curious as to what we are getting into.
scoop Yes, I am curious too about buying meds. Has anyone gone overseas or on-line or can recommend a good pharmacy?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate pwtnurse Ok at 28 you have time but I would not take clomid for a long period of time, like any drug you don't want to take it forever, so I would say that after 3-6 cycles of clomid you need to move on
2bmummy Our insurance does not pay ANYTHING for infertility. However, I ask my OB to file everytime- every sono, every exam, everything, and you know what- the insurance compnay who says that they pay nothing end up paying for some things- probably about 40%!
Daniel_Becker schuemama - the more tech you do the more it costs - IUI's per say are not expensive in comparrison to IVF but the cost of meds can make even IUI's expensive - also you need to factor in whether or not your health insurance will pay for post IUI monotoring
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate I have many wonderful specialty pharmacies for fertility meds on our referral list. Please call the toll free AFA Support Line at 888-917-3777 for a referral in your area, information or just some good ‘ol fashioned support!
maxine maxine> my medication are covered by my insurance but the treatments depends on the organization you use for you speciments.
liberati I am trying to decde iif I should have a lap done as well - has anyone had this done ?
Queens_College Early fifties, donor egg, she takes ovulation suppressant medication and recipient also takes ovulation suppressant medication and build-up the uterus for implantation medication. One RE said the donor is taking more/stronger medication than the recipient
pwtnurse_yahoo.com we are working on moving on but it is taking some real work to line up a specialist so far away to work with my dr here, we agreed to try 2 more iui's while we work on it
pwtnurse_yahoo.com liberati, i had a lap last summer, they diagnosed endometriosis
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate pwtnurse that sounds reasonable
schuemama what is post iui monitoring?
  singleandtrying joined
Daniel_Becker scoop - generally there are some concerns about buying meds overseas because of various factors including control temperature question - you are better off buying in the US because it is known as good quality - there are many good pharmacies and many will deliver or ship at no charge, reduced charge or split charge
Daniel_Becker Hi single welcome
3sunflower Has anyone had an HSG? Is it as painful as its reputation?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate Welcome singleandtrying
schuemama pw- any idea of endometriosis before lap procedure?
Daniel_Becker 3sun - generally not too bad if you get a little meds before
2bmummy sunflower- I have had an HSG and I didn't think it was painful at all and I'm a wimp
liberati pwtnurse - how long did it takeyou to recover from the lap?
  Z joined
pwtnurse_yahoo.com i also had an HSG, is was uncomfortable for me during but once is was done it wasn't anything
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate 3 sunflower if you take some over the counter meds like motrin an hour before you should be fine
Daniel_Becker Zhas welcome - feel free to ask any question
pwtnurse_yahoo.com i was back to work 4 days after my lap, still sore but not bad
Queens_College who has option to use patch. Can you explain the difference in the approach of two different REs: one treats donor and recipient the same; the other doesn't. Is it a standardized protocol or customized according to whether recipient in early 50s is still possibly ovulating?
schuemama I was told that HSG are NOT painful. Mine was. However, all pain subsided about 1 hour after procedure. No major or prolonged bleeding. A lot of cramping during procedure and after.
Z Type here
3sunflower OK--thank you for that feedback. Can it increase fertility or is that an old wives' tale?
2bmummy Has anyone been diagnosed with "unexplained infertilitity?"
Daniel_Becker Queens I think it depends on the RE's practice and experience
liberati so far I am definitely unexplained - and its driving me crazy
  al46 joined
2bmummy Sun- my doctor told me to go home and try it out- maybe positive attitutde psychology but I have heard of people getting pregant after the procedure- the process of cleaning out the tubes may make for easier travel....
Daniel_Becker 3sun - not a wives tale - if there is a blockage - the blockage can get flushed and that will increase chances
Daniel_Becker a146 welcome
pwtnurse_yahoo.com I work on an ob unit as a nurse and i have seen many patients concieve after having a lap but is seems to be more luck than anything since many don't
Z 3sun is something you find on the counter
Daniel_Becker I must say - this is an active room - it is great to see this

scoop Me to, I have some stuff I gotta get done. Good luck and keep on smiling!

liberati my doctor tells me the lap won't necessarily help increase my fertility - he recommends moving on to injectibles adn IVF if necessary without exploring the possibility of endometriosis. another specialist told me to have the lap after we tried clomid - not sure who to believe
schuemama When I click on the "click herec' for upcoming sessions I don't get anything. can you tell me what some of the upcoming sessions are? what's next?
pwtnurse_yahoo.com i did 3 rounds of clomid and then moved on the the HSG which was clear and then had my lap
  bsxx left
singleandtrying i had my fsh tested on day 3 and it was 14.7. i took clomid this month and had it tested on day 10 and it was still 14.7. does it mean that with taking the clomid and the number not decreasing that i really should not be wasting my time with iui but should start pushing for IVF?
schuemama pw - id you have the lap? just because you weren't conceiving?
schuemama pw - sorry...why did you have the lap....
Daniel_Becker pw it sounds like you are moving in the right directions - step at a time
pwtnurse_yahoo.com i had the lap bacause of not conceiving and also due to severe cramping with my cycle
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate single how old are you?
3sunflower pw-how many follicles did you produce on Clomid?
pdaya If it is an option of trying clomid which is noninvasive vs a lap I would try clomid first.
schuemama what are follicles?
Daniel_Becker follicles are the sacs that may or may not contain ova or eggs
3sunflower Follicles are pouches which contain the eggs
schuemama how many are "normal" in a cycle w/o meds?
  scoop left
pwtnurse_yahoo.com 2-3, we haven't checked every cycle, my dr thinks that if you are ovulating there is no need to test every cycle
schuemama does a follicle contain one egg, or many?
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate schuemama e mail me at Loriattheafa@aol.com and I will forward the connections newsletter to you. Did everyone sign up for NO Barriers our Free ON Line membership - it is great and everything is e mailed to you
Daniel_Becker pw test what - sorry I missed that
pwtnurse_yahoo.com follicles

3sunflower If follicles are growing on both ovaries, do both ovaries release eggs each month or just one?

Daniel_Becker we still have some time - anything else
3sunflower How many good-size follicles are typical with injectables?
Daniel_Becker welcome back single
Daniel_Becker 3sun that is a tough one
singleandtrying657 did you see my prior question
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate I want to thank Dan Becker for being such a great moderator and filling in for the doc in a pinch at the very last minute - Great Job Dan!
Daniel_Becker it really depends on the type and durration of the meds
Daniel_Becker single sorry I missed it tell me again
Daniel_Becker 3sun it also depends on what kind of cycle you are doing
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate single I missed it too
Daniel_Becker obviously, if you are doing IVF you want more folicles than if you are doing IUI
singleandtrying657 i had my fsh tested on day 3 and it was 14.7 which is high. i took clomid this month and had it tested on day 10 and it was still 14.7. decause it did not go down and it is high does that mean i am wasting my time tryiing to do iui and need to push for ivf?
Daniel_Becker Thank you Lori M for those kind words
3sunflower I'll be doing IUI with Gonal-F 150.
pdaya Thanks Lori and Daniel. It has been very interesting. I will call the referral line. Thanks and good luck to all.
Daniel_Becker single I am not a doc but I am not sure the relevance of why testing on day 3 and Day 10 - day 3 is the standard protocall
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate single it depends on your age too - how old are you if you don't mind my asking
Daniel_Becker 3sun I think between 1 and 3 is what most REs would look for
singleandtrying657 42
singleandtrying657 being single insurance won't pay for anything until i am diagnosed as infertile andi don't want to run out of money or time before then and want to be as agressive as possible
  pdaya left
Daniel_Becker single I think you should really talk with your doc about this
Daniel_Becker single I am confussed - then why not get a diagnosis
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate single at 42 I would stronly suggest that after 3 cycles of IUI and/or clomid I would definitely move on..... I might move on right away!
singleandtrying657 i was trying to get a second opinion by coming here to ask one or others who may have
singleandtrying657 so then i will try the 3 cycles before i start my push. thank you
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate single we are not doctors but I would move on.....to IVF
singleandtrying657 thanks
Lori_Masi_-_AFA_Patient_Advocate We will have to stop in a few minutes any more questions?
3sunflower Thank you for your thoughtful answers. Good night.
