I have had one misscarriage(11wks),  and 2 chemical pregnancies.  My RE put me on prometrium after i found out i was pregnant, (hcg was 175) i was wondering can it help raise progesterone after the fact or should i have been on it sooner? hcg rose to 450 and declined at 10days late i started bleeding.  was my medicine started to late?

Dear Trisha,
Progesterone, which is produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, is essential for successful implantation and maintenance of pregnancy.
However, it is controversial as to whether a defect in the corpus luteum function (luteal phase defect) really exists and is related to miscarriage, and there is no consensus on the best method of diagnosis or treatment.  Therefore, it is unclear whether the medicine was started to late, or if this outcome was inevitable.  Recurrent pregnancy loss can be so upsetting.  Please remember to take care of your emotional health, as well as your physical health during this difficult time; you may want to consider yoga, acupuncture, stress reduction, massage, therapy, etc.
Best Regards,
