I have been ttc for the last 5 months and have been unsuccessful. During this time period I have stopped eating red meat and have stuck to a strictly organic diet. Is this helping or hindering my chances of conceiving?

Dear NenaNena:
There are very few studies in this area.  I would recommend a common sense approach.  If you are eating a balanced, healthy diet for yourself, then this should be fine for conceiving.  There is some evidence that a low glycemic index diet may be helpful for ovulatory infertility.  In any case, a low glycemic index diet is a healthy one for most people.

I often find that seeing a professional nutritionist for an analysis of your diet and recommendations for improvement can be extremely helpful.  This is especially true if you are trying to gain or lose weight or if your diet is restricted - vegetarians, etc.

Best regards,
Serena Chen, MD
