Infertility after 3 Miscarriages

I am 35 and have been pregnant 3x and have miscarried all three.  Over approx three years of testing and visiting doctors it has been determined that I have the MTHFR genetic defect (for which i’m on extra folate) and have a short luteal phase defect (not to mention that I have vulvodynia).  Before all this was determined I typically had no problem becoming pregnant.  Each time we conceived after the 1st or 2nd time of unprotected intercourse.  But now it has been a year of baby-making and 1 IUI cycle (Jan ‘10) and have still not conceived.  My husband’s sperm morphology was not the best, but for this first IUI his “washed” sperm numbered 32 million (which we were told was really good).  I am a worrier and am totally concerned that something I am doing since we found out about my problems have caused my infertility.  During our past year of infertility I started taking a baby aspirin daily, extra B6 and B12, Vitamin D, a Fish Oil supplement, Neevo (prenatal), and Deplin for the folate issue.  Could any of these cause infertility issues?  I realize it’s probably a plethora of problems (not to mention my age).  Could clomid potentially cause infertility if it dries up cervical mucus?

Second question - my doctor has me on letrazole now instead of clomid.  Is it better than clomid?  Same success rates?  I am so stressed over this first cycle not working.  I also cannot imagine us paying thousands of dollars for IVF with my miscarriage history.  Any advice?

Please help . . .

I am sorry for your losses.
It does not sound like the supplements you are taking would be causing infertility issues.  Clomid can result in a thin lining and therefore decrease implantation rates.  However, it can be helpful in women with an inadequate luteal phase.  Evidence supporting the use of aromatase inhibitors (Letrozole) in ovulation induction for infertility treatment has been accumulating, and preliminary studies have shown it to be as efficacious as clomid for ovulation induction, but there are no large scale trials comparing aromatase inhibitors with clomid for ovulation induction.
There have been 3 large studies looking at pregnancy outcomes following aromatase inhibitor use for ovulation induction.  Of these 3, only 1 reported a possible increased risk to the offspring with the use of aromatase inhibitors and there are many reported flaws to this study.  I recommend you discuss these concerns with your reproductive endocrinologist.
Recurrent pregnancy loss can be such an emotionally difficult situation to deal with, and I strongly recommend that you seek psychological counseling as well if you think it may help.
Best of Luck,

Thank you so much for your comments.  I have spoken to my doctor about Letrazole extinsively and feel much better about using it.  We just had our 2nd IUI today and are hopeful yet cautious.  I need to be able to cope with the fact that we may never know what is causing my secondary infertility, which is very difficult for me to grasp since logically everything should have an explanation; we just may not be able to know what that is.  I am currently in therapy and have found this to be very beneficial.  It has been such a stressful and long process that I know I will never be the same.  But hopefully things will work out for us.

Hi i have a friend that actually had 2 miscarriages and after that she has difficulty conceiving. She found out that she has this PCOS and now she is taking treatment. Is it still possible for her to conceive? We are worried about her emotional condition right now.
