If a woman is 37 years old and trying to concieve, but is unsuccessful, how long must she wait before seeking medical treatment?
Dear Steve:
If you are concerned, you can speak with your doctor now.
In general, if someone has no risk factors, then you can try for 6 months before seeking medical treatment.
Risk factors for infertility include a history of pelvic surgery, pelvic infection, chronic medical illness, endometriosis, PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), irregular periods, inability to have intercourse, cigarette smoking, premature ovarian failure, brain tumour, injury or surgery, age over 40, 2 or more first trimester miscarriages in a row, 1 or more second trimester miscarriages, history of a tubal pregnancy, previous radiation therapy or chemotherapy, history of cancer, etc.
Hope this helps
