Because you are working with a lawyer and ask about adopting from within the U.S., I am guessing you plan to adopt an infant domestically, rather than internationally or through the domestic foster care system.  Hopefully, you have chosen a lawyer who specializes in adoption, and who is a professional member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys.

First and foremost, I would encourage you to talk with your lawyer about your options.  As your service provider, he or she is an important resource whose job is to help you through the entire process.  Your lawyer can explain the circumstances under which you will need another professional for additional services.

To answer your question, yes, there might be a pregnant woman anywhere in the country who’ll become interested in what you have to offer a child, though it’s also possible a woman from your home state who’s contemplating an adoption plan will choose to place her baby with you.  Most people work with their adoption agencies or attorneys to develop some sort of outreach to prospective birthmothers nationwide.

As for “good states” from which to adopt, each of the states has different standards, and if you adopt a baby from outside of Tennessee your lawyer will help make sure that you meet certain requirements for interstate adoptions.  Depending upon any connections you make in other states, you have plenty of time to learn more.

Good luck with your adoption process!

Your question centers around the issue of the state you reside in.  A child from one state to another state must meet the requirements of both states in order to move the child . The INTERSTATE COMPACT of your state sets certain requirements. An attorny specializing in adoption such as th AAAA association can help you in your outreach. A parent support group in your area is the best place to start to find examples of attornies and or agencies in your immediate area. Do not rush through the process . Some situations seem to be easy but yet maybe something that will only bring heartache later. Laws to protect ALL members of the triad vary from state to state. But complying with them are apriority to fulfill your family dream

If you are in a same sex relationship this would potentially effect what states that you would be able to adopt from.  If you are single or married to a person of the opposite sex then I agree with the others that have responded to your question.  I wish you the best.  Dawn

Are the laws in Illinois more stringent in adoption?
