The American Fertility Association Comments on Octuplets
January 30, 2009 - New York City Little information is being released on whether the woman who gave birth to octuplets at a California hospital conceived the babies through fertility treatments. Though, experts say, it’s highly unlikely the babies were conceived naturally. While the deliveries were a success, a great deal of danger comes along with carrying this many babies, according to Karen Hammond, of Alabama Reproductive Specialists and an executive board member of The American Fertility Association.
“I congratulate this lady for having the fortitude to carry octuplets to viability, but in a sense, this birth represents a failure of infertility treatment. The majority of such high-order multiple pregnancies end with loss of all the infants, and multiple pregnancy poses dangers for the mother as well,” says Hammond.
The parents’ names have not been released and at last report, all eight babies are in stable condition at Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center in Bellflower, Calif, where the babies were born via cesarean section.
